THE SEED SECTOR AND US
Vegetable Seed Sector in India:
Unlike the seed sectors of paddy, wheat, maize, pulses and some cash crops, which are quite organised, the vegetable seed sector in India is greatly unorganised. Most farmers use their own seeds. M.N.C.s and some Indian Private Sector Companies produce limited Hybrid and O.P. vegetable seeds. But considering the demands of quality vegetable seeds of large and varied varieties, the supply position is very poor.

Pallishree is producing vegetable seeds, both Hybrid and O.P. varieties of about 15 vegetable crops.

Origin of Vegetable Seed Varieties:

  • Hybrid Vegetable Seeds - Government of India's Agricultural Institutes supply some parental lines. Pallishree Limited has obtained some such lines and are producing and marketing these F1 seeds.
  • O.P. variety of Vegetable Seeds - Agricultural Institutes Develop selective varieties of vegetable seeds. Pallishree Limited obtains these lines, then produces and markets them.

Paddy Seed Scenario in India:
Three main streams of Paddy Seeds are in use by farmers:-

  • Conventional varieties of Paddy Seeds.
  • High Yielding Varieties (HYV) of paddy seeds.
  • Hybrid Paddy Seeds.
