Pulses

A very important source of protein – they form an essential adjunct to a predominantly cereal-based diet with enriched biological value in Indian dietary.

The common pulses are Black-gram (Urd), Bengal-gram, Green-gram (Mung), Lentil, Gram, Arhar, Pea etc.

Besides rich sources of protein (20-30% and almost 3 times than that of cereals) they enrich the soil through direct biological Nitrogen fixation – an important factor for sustainable agriculture. From time immemorial pulse crops have been valued as food, fodder and feed.

Average area of cultivation in West Bengal is 22100 hectares with a total production of 15270 MT., average productivity being 688 kg/hectare. Total area of cultivation in India is 22846.9 thousand hectare and the production is 13069.5 TMT.
