Pulses
A very important source of protein they form an essential
adjunct to a predominantly cereal-based diet with enriched biological value in Indian
dietary.
The common pulses are Black-gram (Urd), Bengal-gram, Green-gram (Mung),
Lentil, Gram, Arhar, Pea etc.
Besides rich sources of protein (20-30% and almost 3 times than that of
cereals) they enrich the soil through direct biological Nitrogen fixation an
important factor for sustainable agriculture. From time immemorial pulse crops have been
valued as food, fodder and feed.

Average area of cultivation in West Bengal is 22100 hectares with a
total production of 15270 MT., average productivity being 688 kg/hectare. Total area of
cultivation in India is 22846.9 thousand hectare and the production is 13069.5 TMT.
